Tracy Chapman is the debut album by American singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman, released April 5, 1988, on Elektra Records. Recorded at Powertrax studio in Hollywood, California in eight weeks, the album was produced by David Kershenbaum with a deliberately stripped-down acoustic sound. Lyrically focused on political and social causes, it received wide critical acclaim and reached No. 1 on the US Billboard 200, eventually selling over 20 million copies worldwide and earning six-times platinum certification in the US. The single "Fast Car" — performed at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute — became an international hit. In April 2025 the album was inducted into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress.
