To Pimp a Butterfly is the third studio album by American rapper Kendrick Lamar, released on March 15, 2015, by Top Dawg Entertainment, Aftermath Entertainment, and Interscope Records. Primarily a hip-hop album, it incorporates jazz, funk, and soul, with production from Sounwave, Terrace Martin, Thundercat, Flying Lotus, Pharrell Williams, Boi-1da, Dr. Dre, and others. Guest appearances include George Clinton, Thundercat, Bilal, Anna Wise, Snoop Dogg, James Fauntleroy, Ronald Isley, and Rapsody. Lyrically, the album addresses African-American culture, racial inequality, depression, and institutional discrimination. It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 324,000 copies in its first week, and received widespread critical acclaim — earning Best Rap Album at the 2016 Grammy Awards and an Album of the Year nomination. In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked it 19th on its updated list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
