Primarily a hip-hop album, it incorporates jazz, funk, and soul, with production from Sounwave, Terrace Martin, Thundercat, Flying Lotus, Pharrell Williams, Boi-1da, Dr. Dre, and others. Guest appearances include George Clinton, Thundercat, Bilal, Anna Wise, Snoop Dogg, James Fauntleroy, Ronald Isley, and Rapsody. Lyrically, the album addresses African-American culture, racial inequality, depression, and institutional discrimination. It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 324,000 copies in its first week, and received widespread critical acclaim — earning Best Rap Album at the 2016 Grammy Awards and an Album of the Year nomination.
