What's Going On is the eleventh studio album by Marvin Gaye, originally released May 21, 1971 on Tamla (a Motown subsidiary). A landmark of progressive and psychedelic soul, the concept album is narrated from the perspective of a Vietnam veteran returning home to witness poverty, injustice, and ecological crisis. Gaye served as producer for the first time, and the album features the Funk Brothers session musicians. It produced three top-10 Hot 100 singles: the title track, 'Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology),' and 'Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler).' Rolling Stone ranked it the greatest album of all time in both 2020 and 2023. This pressing is a 50th Anniversary Limited Edition Target retailer exclusive on transparent green colored vinyl with a fold-out poster. All runouts are hand-etched.
